- (5/29) Work, Sleep Well in a Small Place
- AUDIO Work, Sleep Well in a Small Place Working from home in a small apartment is fine during the day. But when nighttime comes, it may be more difficult to turn off work and get a good night’s sleep. This can be especially difficult in a studio apartment. In a studio apartment, the living room, kitchen and sleeping area are all in one room. These kinds of apartments are common in large cities with a high cost of living. With electronics, kitchen items, clothes and books all in one space, it can be hard to create a restful place for sleep. Kim Cook, a reporter for the Associated Press, asked sleep experts and interior design experts for advice on how to work productively and sleep well in a small one-room area. Be honest about how you live Everyone needs good sleep to stay healthy. “The primary rule, maybe the only rule of small space design, is people have to be honest about how they really live,” says Olivia Hosken. She is deputy managing editor of House Beautiful. She adds that when you have limited space, you need furniture that works well in the room. A good bed is important for good sleep She suggests spending money on a high-quality bed. Even better is a high-quality sleep sofa that can double as a bed and couch. She does not suggest big tables or chairs that you may not use. Andrea Morris is an interior designer with Lancaster Place Interiors in Wilmington, North Carolina. For studio apartments, she likes wall beds. These can be folded up next to a wall when not in use. They are better known as Murphy beds, named after William Murphy. He came up with this idea in 1900 while living in his own studio apartment in San Francisco, California. Create a sleep area To separate your sleep area from the rest of the apartment, you can purchase a freestanding screen or room divider. And as much as you can, keep your sleep area strictly for sleeping, experts say. Jeff Kahn is co-founder of the Chicago-based sleep-research company Rise Science. His company developed a sleep-tracking app called Rise. His suggestion is to “avoid doing work or anything stressful from your bed.” He said that this helps the brain connect your bed with only sleep rather than wakefulness and work. However, that is not always possible. If you use your bed during the daytime, you can do small things to keep daytime tasks and sleep separate. Lisa Strauss is a psychologist and expert in sleep disorders. She suggests using one side of the bed for reading and the other for sleeping. You can also bring out special blankets and pillows used only for sleeping. Freshen the air. Lower the lights. Cut the noise. Kahn also suggests keeping a clean, peaceful environment. For starters, he says to make sure the air flow is good. “Make sure your space is well ventilated, and consider an air purifier,” says Kahn. He adds that this is especially important if you cook and sleep in the same place. Another interior expert is Mia Ingui. She is editor at Spruce, a home design website. She suggests using calming smells like lavender or chamomile at bedtime, to “set the tone for restful sleep.” Also, be sure that computer, TV, and other electronic screens are turned off. In a small room, these devices are probably a short distance from the bed. Their light at night can affect our internal clocks, or circadian rhythm. Do not forget about the sounds these devices make. If the buzz of nearby devices, appliances, or street sounds keep you awake, consider a noise machine. Ingui likes the Hatch Restore, a “sunrise lamp” that provides soothing sounds and lights up slowly in the morning. You can also buy noise cancelling curtains. These cut down on outside noises. Keep things clean and organized Andrea Morris, the home designer, says one thing to avoid when it comes to studio living is leaving beds unmade. “It’s amazing how much better you feel after a hard day entering a space with a made bed,” she said. At night, she suggests putting away electronics. Side tables with plugs and ports for electronics help you store devices and keep things tidy – or organized and clean. This is another example of choosing furniture that has multiple uses. Choose multi-use, storable bedding If it is difficult to control your studio apartment’s heating and cooling, Ingui recommends choosing materials for bedding that let the skin breathe. Such materials can keep you cool in warm weather and warm in cooler temperatures. She also suggests buying several pieces of bedding that are easy to store rather than big, bulky blankets. Studio apartments often do not have a lot of storage. With some thoughtful choices, your small space can have the feeling we all want from home life: calm, clean and good for both working and sleeping. And that’s the Health & Lifestyle report. ______________________________________________ Words in This Story studio apartment – n. a small apartment consisting typically of a main room, kitchenette, and bathroom interior design – n. the art of decorating and furnishing the interior of a building primary – adj. of first rank, importance, or value psychologist – n. a person who specializes in the study of mind and behavior or in the treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders ventilated – v. to expose to air and especially to a current of fresh air air purifier – n. a device that removes contaminating particles (such as dust and pollen) from the air tone – n. general character or quality circadian rhythm – n. the natural patterns that take place in your body over the course of each 24-hour cycle. bulky – adj. large in size or mass https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/work-sleep-well-in-a-small-place/7705532.html

- (5/28) Five Things to Know about Notre Dame Cathedral
- AUDIO Five Things to Know about Notre Dame Cathedral The Roman Catholic religious center is considered a jewel of Gothic building design, a symbol of Paris and is a popular site to visit. The cathedral took 182 years to build between the 12th and 14th centuries. It holds some surprising stories. Here are five special things to know about this famous Parisian site: The cathedral is considered France's geographic center. In front of the cathedral, a metal and stone marker in the road describes the place as the "starting point of the roads of France.'' This sign marks the starting point for measuring distances between Paris and other cities across the country. The marker was placed in 1924, but the idea of the cathedral as the center of the nation dates to 1769. King Louis XV thought there should be a central site for France's growing system of roads. That idea tied the nation’s geography to its heart in Paris. Its famous statues were added in the 19th century Those frightening stone statues on Notre Dame might seem ancient, but not all of them are what they appear. The gargoyles are monster-shaped elements used to direct rainwater away from the building. They have been around since the time of the cathedral's construction. But the monster-like creatures often seen in photos and movies are chimera, and they are much newer. In 1841, the French government asked the architects Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Jean-Baptiste Lassus to repair the then-collapsing building. Viollet-le-Duc added these frightening-looking statues to make the cathedral seem more mysterious. He drew ideas for the chimera from Victor Hugo's famous book The Hunchback of Notre Dame. How to tell them apart? Gargoyles resemble horizontal spikes coming out of the facade and have spouts to permit rainwater to flow out. During the French Revolution, protesters changed Notre Dame. During the French Revolution, there were protests of religious centers. In 1793, revolutionaries took away the cathedral’s religious symbols and renamed it "Notre-Dame de la Raison," or, in English, “Our Lady of Reason.” During that time, the cathedral held events celebrating science and new ideas and, for a short time, it was even used to store the alcoholic drink called wine. Religious services started again in 1795 under the rule of Napoleon I. Statues without heads were found and repaired. In 1792, revolutionaries also cut the heads off 28 statues from the front of Notre Dame, thinking the statues were of French royalty. They were really representations of ancient kings of Judah, from stories in the Bible, the Christian holy book. The heads were thought lost forever. But in 1977, workers working in a courtyard in Paris uncovered hundreds of pieces of stone sculptures. Experts confirmed they were the missing heads of Notre Dame's kings of Judah statues. Today, 22 of the heads have been repaired and are shown at the Cluny Museum in Paris. The 2019 fire exposed a worldwide lack of outdoor lead pollution guidelines. The 2019 fire that almost destroyed Notre Dame caused a serious health risk. When the flames melted the top of the building, large amounts of harmful lead dust were released into the air and came down across Paris. Officials found there were no rules to measure the danger of outdoor lead dust. This was not just a Paris issue — major cities like London and Rome, and even the World Health Organization — do not have guidelines for outdoor lead pollution. The Notre Dame fire forced officials to take a closer look at their safety standards. It took four months for the city to complete an extensive cleaning of the city’s streets even as visitors and the citizens of Paris walked around the cathedral every day. Now that you know these five things, you can enjoy seeing the photos of the new Notre Dame. ______________________________________________ Words in This Story symbol – n. an action, object, event, etc., that expresses or represents a particular idea or quality gargoyle – n. a strange or ugly human or animal figure that sticks out from the roof of a building (such as a church) and is used to cause rainwater to flow away from the sides of a building. chimera – n. a monster from Greek mythology that breathes fire and has a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake's tail resemble – v. to look or be like horizontal – adj. positioned from side to side rather than up and down; parallel to the ground spike – n. a long, thin rod that ends in a point and is often made of metal façade – n. the front of a building spout – n. a tube, pipe, or hole out of which a liquid flows royalty – n. members of a royal family courtyard – n. an open space that is surrounded completely or partly by a building or group of buildings flame – n. the hot, glowing gas that can be seen when a fire is burning https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/five-things-to-know-about-notre-dame-cathedral/7887024.html

- (5/27) A Guide to Recovering Overgrown Garden
- AUDIO A Guide to Recovering Overgrown Garden What is the best way to repair an overgrown garden? Garden expert for the Associated Press Jessica Damiano believes she knows the answer. Here are some of her suggestions for making big improvements. Planning in the autumn and winter months can help you see something much more beautiful next winter: Decide what to clear away First, take a notebook with you and walk around the garden. Look carefully at each part. Try to decide which plants can be saved, which to throw away, and which ones require attention. Make a list as soon as you can. Dead plants, weeds and invasive plants should be first to go. If the weather permits, dig them out, removing as much of their root systems as possible. Otherwise, wait until spring to do this before planting. Next, remove and give away healthy plants that you do not want. Online groups and neighborhood web pages are places to find people to receive the plants. Many people will even be willing to do the digging if it means getting a free plant. If the garden is full of plants, shrubs, trees and vines that have grown wild, you might need to use a chainsaw or heavy machine. Define any new beds If there are a lot of weeds or if you want to create new garden beds, you can cover the existing vegetation rather than dig it up. Decide the size and shape of the area you want to make into a new bed. Cover that area with cardboard or lots of newspaper. Put about seven centimeters of compost and five centimeters of mulch on top of it. You can start in the autumn and leave it there over the winter until planting time in the spring. When it is time to plant, cut holes in the cardboard or paper big enough for the roots of your plants. The covering over the ground will keep most weeds from growing. Some weeds may break through and require pulling or more cardboard, Damiano said. How and when to prune Healthy but overgrown or unproductive deciduous shrubs can be brought back to life by pruning. “Deciduous” means that the plants lose their leaves during the winter season. The best time to prune many plants is when their branches are bare in late winter. Choosing a pruning method will require weighing appearance against the time it will take to recover. The fastest and most severe method would be to cut the whole plant down just above ground level. Although extreme, many shrubs can deal with this form of pruning and will bounce back stronger. If keeping the plant looking normal is important, prune each branch or stem individually at uneven heights. It is also possible to cut back one-third of the plant's branches each year for three years. That method would have the least severe effect but requires the most patience. Evergreen trees and shrubs should only undergo light pruning such as the shortening of individual branches. Take care to avoid pruning too much or creating holes in evergreen plants and trees. With the exception of yews, they do not regrow from such damage. Looking to the dirt Now that you have taken care of pruning, turn your attention to the soil. Test the soil's pH, or its acidity level. Do this to make sure the soil is good for the plants you plan to add. Test kits are available at local garden stores and online. In the United States, a cooperative extension service might provide soil testing and soil-amendment advice for a small cost. Cooperative extension services are part of a Department of Agriculture system that includes some universities. It aims to help farmers and people interested in plants. If the soil is hard, break it up with a machine or hand tools. Finally, spread five to seven centimeters of compost over the area. As it breaks down, nutrients will work their way into the soil. Planting considerations After completing these steps, it will be time to plant your new garden. Choose new trees, shrubs or perennials, that will not grow wildly. Dig holes as deep as their roots but two times as wide and space them out to their expected full-grown sizes. Native plants are good because they need little added water or special care. Plant groundcover – short, spreading plants – to cover the ground and keep weeds from growing and the soil from drying out. It might take one or two years, but a step-by-step approach will make gardening a joy again. And, perhaps best of all, you will see something beautiful when you look outside from your home. ______________________________________________ Words in This Story garden – n. a plot of ground where herbs, fruits, flowers, or vegetables are grown weed –n. an undesirable plant that grows grow thickly and crowds out more desirable plants chain saw – n. a tool with sharp metal teeth that cuts through wood vegetation –n. plant life or total plant cover (as of an area) cardboard – n. a material made from cellulose fiber (as wood pulp) like paper but usually thicker compost – n. a mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and conditioning land mulch – n. a covering (as of straw or sawdust) spread over the ground to protect the roots of plants from heat, cold, or evaporation, prevent soil loss, control weeds, enrich the soil, or keep fruit (as strawberries) clean shrub – n. a woody plant that has several stems and is smaller than most trees prune – v. to cut off the parts of a woody plant that are dead or not wanted bounce back –v.
包冉十分看好这种租赁模式,他进一步将整个消费市场分为四类:To C(即消费者,Customer)、To B(即企业,Business)、To G(即政府,Government)、To S(即科研机构,Science)。 https://china.cnr.cn/gdgg/20250520/t20250520_527176648.shtml
